"Recovery" at Marblehead Little Theatre
Tickets for MLT’s production of Anne Marilyn Lucas’s Recovery, running October 5 through 13, are now on sale. Recovery was previously staged at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, premiered in NYC at Theater for the New City in October 2018, and will be performed in Greece in March 2020. Boston director Bridget Kathleen O’Leary, former Asst. Artistic Director of New Repertory Theatre, is directing the MLT cast of eight women, who range in age from 16 to over 50 and are from various North Shore communities. The production is also being led by Nina Groom as Asst. Director, Producers Emily Black, Anne M. Lucas, and Mathew Chetnik, set designer Andrew Barnett, costumer Laura Dillon, sound designer Greg Dana, and lighting designer Len Schnabel.
This poignant play centers around three young women, all grappling with the reality of addiction, and their mothers. As reported by the New York Times, “more people died of drug overdoses in 2018 than in the entire Vietnam War.” “Anne Lucas's new play RECOVERY is a powerful, brilliantly conceived, and ultimately redemptive tour de force that plunges us into the lives of a group of mothers and daughters who are struggling with the hopes and challenges of healing from addiction,” says Deborah Sosin, LICSW, clinical social worker, and author of Breaking Free of Addiction: 42 Therapeutic Tools to Help You Recover from Problem Drug and Alcohol Use. “Recovery deals with the parent-adolescent struggle over drug addiction with insight and compassion. It will draw you in, wring you out, and make you think, since playwright Anne Lucas has fought this fight and come out of it with her relationship and her daughter reclaimed. A play straight from the heart,” reports Linda Weltner, Boston Globe Columnist.
There will be talkbacks after every performance to discuss addiction, featuring Rep. Lori Erlich on October 6 at 2pm; Caron Treatment Centers on October 10; Jeff Korsenick (financial cost of addiction) on October 12; and Melissa Weiksnar, author/speaker, on October 13. Tickets may be purchased online at MLTLive.org or at the Arnould Gallery, 111 Washington St, Marblehead, MA.
