Exhibition Reception at The House of the Seven Gables

SALEM — The community is invited to an open house to mark the opening of “Life and Labor over Four Centuries at The House of the Seven Gables.” The reception for the new exhibition is at The Gables’ Visitor Center, 115 Derby Street, Salem, Massachusetts, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., on Friday, April 7. Hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. The event is free and there is some parking onsite. On the eve of The Gables’ 350th anniversary in 2018, the institution’s new exhibition brings to the fore some of the most intriguing stories gathered over three and a half centuries of life and work at the mansion made famous by author Nathaniel Hawthorne. From the women who maintained households at the mansion to mariners to enslaved people, the stories comprise a rich and fascinating history unique to Salem. Each of these histories add context to The Gables’ and its Settlement mission, and to the city of Salem, as well. Also contributing to this year’s theme of work and life at The Gables over four centuries are an esteemed array of authors and historians. Both the popular Seven Lectures at Seven Gables series and the Community Conversations series invite discussion about the impact of labor on modern American immigrants. Besides these signature programs, Gables’ staff plans to offer themed tours, family programs and related theatrical experiences.
