What I Learned Last Summer: a European Historian takes on Salem History

Last summer, Dr. Donna Seger began work on a book about the history of Salem for the city’s upcoming 400 year anniversary. This might seem like a surprising project for a medieval historian, but Dr. Seger has always been fascinated with Salem’s history, and has been blogging about it for the past decade. Join her for an opportunity to learn about lesser-discussed areas of Salem’s history, as she shares some highlights from this summer’s research. Topics include the Remonds, urban renewal, Hugh Peter, the Black Picnic at the Willows, and Town House Square. Dr. Donna Seger is a Professor of Medieval & Early Modern History at Salem State University. She is also the author of The Practical Renaissance: Information Culture and the Quest for Knowledge in Early Modern England (Bloomsbury 2022), and the forthcoming Salem’s Centuries: New Perspectives on the History of an Old American City (Temple University Press, 2025).
