SUMMARY:Underwater in Salem Sound Lecture Series: Rumney Marsh Saltmarsh Sparrow Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Join Salem Sound Coastwatch and the Marblehead Abbot Public Library on Wednesday\, February 26th from 7-8:30pm at the Abbot Public Library.\n\n \n\nHow many times have you passed by the Rumney marshes as you traveled on Route 1\, Route 1A or\n\nrode the commuter rail to Boston?\n\n \n\nOur 3 guest speakers will share their connection and investigations at this 2\,274-acre estuary - Susan Adamowicz with the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge\, David Burdick\, Research Associate Professor of Coastal Ecology and Restoration in the Department of Natural Resources at the University of New Hampshire and Geoff Wilson of Northeast Wetland Restoration.\n\n \n\n Learn how the marshes provide nesting habitat for the endangered saltmarsh sparrow and how a forgotten marsh hay farming technique may help this unique bird survive. We will also hear about the Wheelabrator Saugus Bear Creek Wildlife Sanctuary abutting the marsh. One of the largest bird migration staging areas on the North Shore\, it provides 9 different habitats for 200 bird species plus coyotes\, foxes\, snakes and other wildlife.\n\n \n\nUnderwater in Salem Sound is jointly sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch and the Abbot Public Library. Free and open to the public. For more information info@salemsound.org or call 978-741-7900.
