SUMMARY:Journey to Avalonia: Exploring the Deep Geologic History of Coastal New England
DESCRIPTION:Join Salem Sound Coastwatch and the Abbot Public Library on Wednesday\,April 24th from 7-8:30 pm for the final presentation in the2019 Underwater in Salem Sound Lecture Series\, "Journey to Avalonia: Exploring the Deep Geologic History of Coastal New England." Barry Sidwell\, paleogeologist with over 30 years' experience and author of "The Rocks of Nahant\," will discuss how the rocks of Salem Sound and much of coastal New England have their origins in the lost "micro-continent" of Avalonia. He will describe how geologic concepts of sea-floor spreading and continental drift have changed in the past 70 years or so. Plate Tectonics has revealed that the Earth is much more dynamic than previously thought. The Underwater in Salem Sound Lecture Series is cosponsored and held at the Abbot Public Library\, 235 Pleasant Street in Marblehead and is free and open to the public. Contact info@salemsound.org or 978-741-7900 for more details.
