SUMMARY:Brixton and Belfast: Murals of Protest with Rachel Young
DESCRIPTION:Discussion led by Rachel Young\, Boston College Art and argument go hand in hand\, as the murals that went up on gable walls\, tube stations and other public spaces in Belfast and Brixton in the early 1980s illustrate. Rachael Young will talk about how muralists took to the streets after the 1981 hunger strike in Northern Ireland and the 1981 anti-police uprisings in Brixton's Black community to challenge the traditional power aesthetics of the Thatcher government and to better their own communities.
